How to Prevent Bone Loss After Tooth Extraction
In some cases of severe tooth decay or damage, a tooth extraction may be necessary to prevent infection and other serious oral health concerns. This is typically an option reserved as a last resort. Once the affected tooth is removed, the space that remains needs to be properly addressed, even if the area is in a less visible region of the mouth. If left empty, the missing tooth root can potentially lead to bone loss. This can cause the jaw structure to recede and diminish, which could result in the shifting or loosening of surrounding teeth, alterations to facial shape, and other complications.
After tooth removal, there are a variety of treatments that can help restore smile aesthetics and reduce the likelihood of bone loss. Three common options include:
- Single Tooth Implants – A dental implant is designed to replace an individual tooth with the combination of a durable titanium post and a custom dental crown. The post should fuse to the jawbone and ultimately serve as a kind of artificial tooth root, while the crown serves as the new tooth.
- Multiple Teeth Implants – For patients who are missing numerous teeth, multiple dental implants may be ideal. Depending on specific patient needs and jawbone density, dental implants may be recommended for each missing tooth or a select number of implants may be utilized to hold a dental bridge in place.
- Implant Dentures – Combining the restorative features of both dental implants and custom dentures may be a good solution for some individuals. Implant dentures can replace an entire row of missing teeth. An alternative to removable dentures, implant dentures may be preferred for patients who are not ideal candidates for full teeth replacement utilizing a dental implant for each missing tooth, or for those who are simply looking for other missing teeth replacement solutions.
